Started sleep restriction last night - bedtime 12.30, get-up time 6.00. Every day. Got about three hours' sleep, if that. Idea is to reset body clock, and only be in bed for sleeping. Idea is you get out of bed if you're not sleeping and go somewhere else until sleepy.
Too tired to write in sentences. Too tired to comment at this stage.
Cooking Delia's fast roast pork with rosemary and apples, cider and creme fraiche. Tending a fire. Taking it one hour at a time. Half past midnight seems a long way off.

Gruesome. I had to do this in 2007 when I had not been able to sleep for about three months after/during an oral surgery marathon. It did work eventually and I still only very rarely take naps or sleep in. I hope it will work for you!
Another thing I have learnt from that time is to never ever check what time it is when I am awake/waking up in the night. It only increases the endless thinking.
Have you tried progressive muscle relaxation (google) and/or autogenic training? Again, this takes some time. I got the hang of it after about 2 months of twice daily practice and now I do this often, esp. when in the dentist chair.
A friend with sleep problems swears by taking a shower before bedtime and instead of towelling wraps himself tightly (and wet) in a large sheet, which is supposedly extremely relaxing (I think it's from some anthroposophic school of medicine). I never had the nerve to try it.
I hope you will find sleep and soon.
Oh god, it freaks me out to even think about this - ridiculously, since it obviously isn't going to do you any harm. Good luck! I admire your commitment and hope you soon reap rewards in restful sleep.
thanks both for being with me in this weird experience. It helps to know you're there. And Sabine it helps to know you've been here...
What happens if you drop off during the evening on the sofa? I'm sure I would, even without alcohol. Often heard it's better to get up and do something else with insomnia, but I've never been able to do it, the cold dark empty spaces of the rest of the house don't appeal, but I suppose if you prepared things for it...
Anyway, it's obviously tried and tested so all the best for sticking with it and sorting it out!
Hi Lucy - the idea is to try not to fall asleep, by getting up off sofa and doing something else more active!! But we're only human... naps are discouraged by I had about 20 minutes yesterday afternoon and it helped me keep going!
