Still Horses

Five horses stood in a field. Still, so still. All five of them, three chestnut, two greys, standing close, but not too close, one a little further away and at a slight angle to the others. Motionless, their eyes half-closed. Heads up but a little down, eyelashes visible against fur. All entirely still. Tails not swishing. I stood and watched for a minute or two. No change. Fantasising about a horse meditation group, a standing siesta. Really, I didn't know, nor ever will.

Bit of a Ted Hughes allusion there...?

Very evocative. A bit like Larkin's "At Grass" also?
