Fly

A fly, heavy as a small stone
travels across the kitchen,
catches light on its fretted wings
as the clouds begin to spill warm rain
from their dull bellies
and all the shoes in the house are still
all the shoes are still.

I like the fretted wings, and those still shoes.

I like the still shoes too.

Carol Ann Duffy - she's great, yes, but (very minor point) I thought she was Scottish? Or was she just born here? Not that this makes any difference really.

I probably should say a 'british' vein running through her work... the pub names, counties and Dutch elm are not exclusively english!! Whether or no she's Scottish (tho I didn't know she was - Jackie Kay is)

That is a nice snapshot.
