Off this afternoon for my Census classroom training. Not without a few doubts, on account of what I have discovered about the involvement of Lockheed Martin and the proposed boycott. I kind of wish someone had told me about this sooner.
I understand that there are people against war - not just in the UK, but everywhere. I am against war.
However, the United States and the UK have always been military allies - haven't heard folks complaining about Lockheed when help was coming... and whether or not people fill out a census is in no way going to shut down or even affect the daily business of Lockheed Martin.
Isn't it silly to get in trouble for doing something that is not going to do anything constructive to further the cause of peace?
Be real, you need the money. I'm inclined to agree with M that non-participation won't hurt LM, it will hurt local government who need the income from it, and passing up on the job would have hurt you too.
I'm not saying it doesn't matter, we need to be aware of these things, and I'll be interested to hear what if any discussions come up about it, but I think you should get on and do what you have to.
Thanks both - pragmatism has prevailed of course. I think boycotting will only harm local allocation of funds, and I do think the conspiracy theories about personal information being abused are off the point (more of our info is out there already than we care to imagine...) But I do think the ONS made a poor decision from a PR perspective in giving this contract to Lockheed. I just hope it won't make my life and those of other collectors too difficult...
