Afternoon West Yorkshire

The cutlery sticks up at odd angles,
wooden spoon, tin opener, bread knife
its blue handle ready to be seized,
Excalibur in a wooden IKEA drainer.
The wind mutters and sighs in the chimney,
an empty egg-box on the work-top,
the kettle cooling, mint tea stewing in my cup.
The suspended animation of 3.30pm
when outside parents pull up to collect
their four-foot offspring
and Cheryl the lollipop lady
shines in her high-vis coat.
